The hip joint enables a wide range of motion and supports body weight during physical activities. For athletes and runners, this area absorbs impact and facilitates movement, making it susceptible to pain that can disrupt routines and performance. Identifying the causes and appropriate responses to hip pain helps reduce discomfort and maintain healthy activity levels.

What Causes Hip Pain?

Hip pain in runners and athletes often results from overuse and repetitive stress. Its specific location may indicate the source. Pain inside the hip or groin is commonly linked to the joint. Outer hip, upper thigh, or buttock pain typically involves surrounding soft tissues. Common causes include:

  • Muscle or Tendon Strain: Repetition of activity can strain the muscles and tendons near the hip.
  • Bursitis: Inflammation of fluid-filled bursae frequently originates from repetitive pressure or overuse.
  • Tendonitis: Overuse can inflame or irritate tendons around the hip, leading to localized pain or tenderness.
  • Stress Fractures: High-impact, repetitive motion in sports can cause small cracks in the femoral neck.

How Is It Treated?

Management of hip pain varies based on cause and symptom severity. For overuse injuries, initial steps typically involve reducing activity to allow tissues time to heal. Runners may adjust the intensity or type of exercise. Applying ice to the affected area for 10-15 minutes several times daily can help reduce inflammation and temporarily relieve pain, especially immediately after injury.

Rehabilitation often includes gentle stretching and strengthening exercises. Improving flexibility and strengthening the hip and core muscles can support joint stability and lessen strain during movement. Structured rehabilitation programs are commonly developed in consultation with a physical therapist to address individual needs.

For persistent pain unresponsive to conservative therapy, pain management specialists may offer additional options. Corticosteroid injections can reduce inflammation around the hip joint and adjacent tissues. Trigger block injections and nerve blocks are available methods designed to disrupt pain signaling, reducing discomfort and restoring mobility in specific circumstances. These interventions are administered and monitored by medical professionals, tailored to each patient’s medical background and symptoms.

When Should You Seek Care?

While many minor hip injuries resolve with conservative actions, some symptoms require evaluation by a healthcare provider. Severe pain, sudden onset of discomfort, or injury from direct trauma are situations in which a prompt medical assessment is indicated. Persistent hip dysfunction also warrants further investigation. Experiencing joint locking or instability, or persistent pain that does not improve with at-home measures, suggests a more significant problem. Physicians use physical exams and imaging studies, such as X-rays or MRIs, to identify underlying issues.

Confer With a Pain Management Specialist

Professional evaluation is often the most effective course for ongoing hip pain. Pain management specialists use diagnostic tools to clarify the source of symptoms and recommend evidence-based solutions. Their expertise includes prescribing medications or discussing interventions such as corticosteroid or nerve block injections if customary treatments offer limited benefit. Early and accurate assessment supports safer recovery and more reliable prevention of future problems. This allows active individuals to resume running or sports with reduced pain and improved function.
